5 Easy Tips to Host the Ultimate Backyard BBQ
At Dead End BBQ (DEB), the art of the neighborhood barbeque is our passion, whether it takes place at our restaurant on Sutherland Avenue or in someone’s backyard. Tender meats, comforting sides, cold drinks, and time with the people we love… it’s all part of what keeps us coming back to this timeless way of gathering.
If you’re gearing up to host your own cookout, you’ll want to plan for the right mix of those elements — but it doesn’t have to be fancy. For good times and even better eats, here are a few easy tips for hosting the ultimate backyard barbeque in Knoxville…
#1 – Plan for the Temperature (Especially Summer Heat!)
Any season, any weather — BBQ just seems to hit the spot. But whether it’s for July 4th or a simple weekend gathering, summer is obviously the quintessential cookout season.
To help beat the summer heat during your backyard cookouts, make sure to plan for how to keep guests comfortable. Here are a few ideas for keeping everyone cool:
- Stock up on cold drinks — go beyond cans of soda with local beers, cocktails, mocktails, or even a classic southern-style lemonade or sweet tea.
- Create shady spots with pop-up canopies, patio umbrellas, or even beach umbrellas scattered around the yard.
- Position fans around the yard (bonus: this can also help shoo away bugs).
- If you really want to go the extra mile, try gentle misting stands or systems — just not too close to the food!
#2 – Get “Grill-Ready”
Whether you’re a grill-master or new to the craft, make sure your grill is ready for go-time.
First, if you haven’t fired up the grill yet this season, check to make sure it’s clean and in working order. Then, inventory your fuel supply (propane, charcoal, pellets, etc.) in light of how much you’re going to cook. You may also need to stock up on must-have grilling tools like:
- Long-handled tongs & spatulas
- Grill gloves (and maybe a stylish apron, if that’s your thing)
- A good meat thermometer (because the right cooking temp helps ensure the best taste and keeps your guests safe!)
- A basting brush
#3 – Take Your Meats to the Next Level
Bring mouthwatering meats to the table by putting some extra thought into your seasonings. On the prep end, you might consider marinades or rubs. A rub, in particular, helps fully-develop the BBQ flavors people know and love, and plays a big role in retaining moisture during cooking. Try one of our DEB rubs on ribs, pork, chicken, and brisket, available in-store to help you elevate your meats at home.
Alongside the meats, you’ll want to offer a variety of sauces for guests to choose from. Be sure to include our DEB red sauce (also available in-store) — a local fav!
#4 – Serve Popular BBQ Items with Staple Sides
Any backyard BBQ in Knoxville should include some staple southern comfort foods as sides! Naturally, coleslaw and potato salad are usually big hits.
Other favorites include: mac and cheese (or our twist on it: Macaroni & Pimento Cheese!), fresh salads, and watermelon. But depending on who’s attending, you might also prefer to ask guests to bring a side to share, potluck-style.
#5 – Plan Ahead for Less Cookout Stress
You’ll enjoy hosting much more with a little proactive planning. Ask yourself: what do you have to prep, buy, or do ahead of time (marinades, sauces, rubs), and what else can you do ahead of time to save time and stress on the day-of?
For example, opting for cold sides and apps or preparing dishes ahead of time to pop into the oven right before the event can help cut down on last-minute tasks and dishes.t
You can also simplify hosting by opting for Dead End’s southern-style sides or a few favorites from our menu. Our catering options offer the perfect quick solution for any backyard get-together in Knox.
Some current fan favorites from the regular menu include our Loaded BBQ Spuds, Cajun Grilled Salmon Salad, and the Smoked Turkey Sandwich. Try one, or try ‘em all!
Happy Planning, Knoxville!
The ultimate backyard barbeque doesn’t have to be complicated. Simply gathering with friends in the backyard around delicious food is already a strong setup for an enjoyable summer day.
