Here’s Why Knoxville is the Perfect Place for BBQ Lovers

If a plate loaded with tender meat, drizzled in mouthwatering sauce, and fresh-made sides sounds like your idea of a good time, you’re in good company in Knoxville.

Our crew at Dead End is full of barbeque lovers, of course, but we’re also part of a larger group of enthusiasts here in Knoxville’s vibrant BBQ food scene. In fact, with its community events, loyal foodies, and influence of regional flavors, Knoxville is full of barbeque flavor and fervor!

Why Knoxville is a Great BBQ City

Loyal Foodies Unite to Support Local Restaurants

It’s a bit of a chicken-egg situation: does Knoxville have a lot of foodies because it has so many great local restaurants, or are there so many great local restaurants because K-Town has a lot of foodies? Either way, from the east side to the west end of town, tons of local restaurants are ready to serve up a range of BBQ cuisines and cooking styles to Knoxville’s hungry patrons.

Whether it’s fine dining or casual eats, Knoxvillians of all tastes consistently show up to support and enjoy local restaurants (especially on game days at the University of Tennessee), which keeps the local food scene thriving. For BBQ lovers, that boils down to a multitude of great options throughout town, although we admit we’re partial to a particular spot on Sutherland Avenue!

Regional BBQ Influences Show Up in East Tennessee Flavor

The U.S. — and especially the South — is full of diverse styles of barbeque. And even though East Tennessee doesn’t necessarily have its own signature barbeque style like, say, Kansas City or Memphis, we’re solidly in the heart of barbeque country, so you’ve got lots of access to high-quality options without being locked into one type.

Here in Knoxville, you can get ribs prepared St. Louis style (or Memphis style) and pulled pork cooked the Carolina way or the Memphis way. You can even get Brazilian barbeque! You can find BBQ brisket, chicken, even bologna — and no shortage of favorite regional sides and sauce styles.

Knoxville Comes Together Over BBQ

As a community-driven business, Dead End BBQ is all about coming together with others in creative ways to support our community and just make life more fun.

Two annual community events drawing a lot of local love in Knoxville are:

1. The Ultimate Bologna Showdown

Bologna lovers: This is the annual event for you! We’re looking forward to partnering with Elm Hill Meats again next year to put on this one-of-a-kind, family-friendly, free event that brings top-ranked competitive eaters from around the country to Knoxville.

Don’t think smoked bologna is good enough to compete with BBQ classics like ribs and pulled pork? Think again… Come on down to Sutherland Ave and check out our Dead End BBQ smoked bologna to see for yourself why even the competitive eaters couldn’t get enough!

2. Smoking School at the University of Tennessee at Knoxville

Each year, it’s an honor for Dead End BBQ to sponsor the UTK Smoking School, where our co-owner George Ewart serves as a guest pitmaster to educate other Knoxville students, residents, and guests from around East Tennessee on the art of smoking delicious meats.

This annual event is a passion project for George and other local BBQ enthusiasts looking to make delicious food, enjoy the grilling or smoking process, and spread the love by sharing the experience with others in Knoxville. We look forward to continuing this partnership with the University of Tennessee in 2026 and beyond!

Rooted in Tennessee & Knoxville BBQ for Nearly 20 Years

The Dead End BBQ concept grew from a seed planted at one big neighborhood block party, where over 40 locals came together on Memorial Day in 2000 to enjoy a community pig roast. From there, the annual gathering grew and George Ewart took his barbeque on the road to competitions, where he earned multiple awards and gained national recognition.

Soon, it was clear that George’s recipes and the atmosphere of the neighborhood barbeque merited a permanent place in the Knoxville food scene. That’s when Dead End BBQ officially opened its custom-designed restaurant space on Sutherland Avenue in 2009.

We’re proud that since that time, Dead End BBQ continues to be a welcoming space for locals and visitors looking to gather with loved ones, celebrate barbeque, and enjoy our great city and state (and sports teams — GBO!).

If you’ve never dined with us, you can check out some of the Knoxville-inspired photos and iconic local memorabilia you can expect to see in the Dead End BBQ restaurant here.

Pro tip for a local Knoxville photo opp! Feeling the local love and neighborhood barbeque spirit? Make sure to swing by our restaurant on Sutherland Ave to check out the awesome mural by local artist, Jessica Ramsey, on the side of our building. It’s a must on your photo opp stops in Knoxville with plenty of local gems “hidden” in it.
